What is Egg Freezing and Why Consider It?

Egg freezing, medically called oocyte cryopreservation, lets a woman preserve her eggs at their current quality for use later in life. The eggs are retrieved, rapidly frozen using a technique called vitrification, and stored safely until she is ready to try for pregnancy — whether that is in a few years or later.

At Diwya Vatsalya Mamta Fertility Centre in Patna, we see women considering egg freezing for very different reasons — not being ready for children yet, a medical diagnosis that could affect future fertility, or simply wanting the option kept open. Whatever the reason, the decision deserves an honest conversation about age, ovarian reserve and realistic expectations, not just the procedure itself.

  • Delaying parenthood by choice — for career, education or personal readiness.
  • Before cancer treatment — chemotherapy or radiation can affect egg quality.
  • Low ovarian reserve or family history of early menopause — preserving eggs while quality is better.
  • Before surgery for endometriosis or ovarian cysts — some procedures can reduce ovarian reserve.

Egg Freezing Process in Patna

The process is similar to the first half of an IVF cycle — it stops once the eggs are frozen, rather than continuing to fertilisation and transfer.

1. Consultation & Testing

AMH blood test and a pelvic ultrasound to assess ovarian reserve, along with routine health screening, before planning the cycle.

2. Ovarian Stimulation

About 10–12 days of hormone injections to encourage several eggs to mature, with regular ultrasound monitoring.

3. Egg Retrieval

A short procedure under mild sedation, taking 15–20 minutes, to collect the mature eggs.

4. Vitrification & Storage

Mature eggs are flash-frozen the same day and stored securely until needed for future use.

When you are ready to use the eggs, they are thawed and fertilised, and treatment continues as a standard IVF or ICSI cycle at our IVF Center in Patna.

Egg Freezing Cost in Patna

Egg freezing has two separate cost components — the retrieval and freezing cycle itself, and ongoing storage. Both are explained upfront, with a written estimate before you begin.

Egg Freezing FAQs

Egg freezing (oocyte cryopreservation) is a procedure where a woman's eggs are retrieved, frozen using a fast-freezing method called vitrification, and stored for future use. When she is ready to conceive, the eggs are thawed, fertilised with sperm, and the resulting embryo is transferred to the uterus.

Egg freezing is commonly considered by women who want to delay childbearing for personal or career reasons, women about to undergo cancer treatment that could affect fertility, women with a family history of early menopause, and women recently diagnosed with conditions such as endometriosis or low ovarian reserve who wish to preserve options.

Egg quality and quantity decline with age, so most specialists recommend freezing eggs before the mid-30s where possible. That said, women in their late 30s can still freeze eggs; the number of eggs needed for a good chance of pregnancy later is simply higher.

The number varies by age and ovarian reserve. A younger woman may retrieve 10 to 15 eggs in a single stimulation cycle, while some women choose to do more than one cycle to bank a higher number of eggs for better future odds.

Frozen eggs can be stored for several years with proper vitrification and monitoring. Storage duration and renewal is discussed and agreed with the patient at Diwya Vatsalya Mamta Fertility Centre, Patna.

The egg retrieval procedure is done under mild sedation and takes about 15 to 20 minutes, so discomfort during the procedure is minimal. Mild bloating or cramping for a day or two afterward is normal.
